Horace O’Bryant School Studio Art students, Alfredo Mejia, Miguel Mejia, and Devora Bustillo work on a paper mache Key West Lighthouse replica, a component of the school’s entry for the upcoming Key West Art & Historical Society Papio Kinetic Sculpture and Art Bike Parade, a fabulously wacky tribute to late Keys rebel-metal artist Stanley Papio, which launches from the Custom House Museum at noon on Saturday, May 4.

Horace O’Bryant School Studio Art student Marc Louissaint works on a model of the La Concha Hotel on Thursday morning, which will be incorporated into the larger design of a kinetic sculpture float for the upcoming Key West Art & Historical Society Papio Kinetic Sculpture and Art Bike Parade, set for a noon kickoff at the Custom House Museum on Saturday, May 4. The finished float, which is being crafted from recycled materials, will reflect two aspects of Key West, as both a hometown and a tourist town, and highlight the responsibility of both locals and visitors to preserve it.

HOB is getting ready for the Parade: Left to right, “Kinetic Coach” Suzanne Brown works with Horace O’Bryant School Studio Art students Uliana Ivannikova, Lucie Bublakova, and Katelyn Jones on Thursday to create one of multiple pieces that will compose the school’s entry in this year’s Papio Kinetic Sculpture and Art Bike Parade. When finished, this unidentifiable concentration of newspaper over wire will emerge as a beautiful flower, with hinges that allow it to move, and will be added to other components of the students’ float which is to feature multiple Key West symbols and landmarks.
